(*) Antoni Tàpies was born in 1923 in Barcelona (Spain). He studied both law and drawing at the Valls Academy (1943).
The military uprising led by General Franco from Morocco spread across Spain and led to the Civil War. Antoni Tàpies, an interior opponent to the dictator, was decisively marked by this atrocious war.
In 1948 he co-founded the group “Dau al Set” and its namesake magazine. He met Joan Miró. After a period of producing surrealist works, Tàpies turned to philosophy and to Eastern art, especially calligraphy. Tàpies transmutes a wide variety of materials, often the humblest, into pictorial signs.
His first solo exhibition was organized in 1950. The artist included colors and fossils in pasted blocks with glue, sand, and plaster that would become “walls bearing witness to the martyrdom of our people.” Tàpies uses newspaper papers, pieces of string for collages with provocative social meaning.
In 1951, in Paris, he meets Braque and Picasso, discovers informal art with Dubuffet and Fautrier and the writings of Michel Tapié. The artist moves toward more figurative compositions toward the end of the 1960s. The cross is a recurring sign in his work, whether painted or graphic, of which he produced numerous works, which he develops in parallel. His torn and scratched compositions continue to express a critical stance. The imprints and traces reveal an inner meditation.
From the early 1980s, Tàpies creates “installations” and dedicates himself to ceramics and mosaic art. Beginning in 1962, major museums organize retrospectives of his work (Hanover in 1962, Vienna in 1968, the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris in 1973, an itinerant retrospective in the United States in 1988…).
Antoni Tàpies is the author of several writings reflecting on art: “Práctica del arte” (1970), “El Arte contra la Estética” (1974). Antoni Tàpies lived and worked in Barcelona, the city where his Foundation is located, created in 1984. The artist died on February 6, 2012, aged 88.
