Description from the seller
Rare three-volume set enriched with 5 folding plates of this important travel narrative devoted to the geography, history, institutions, customs and landscapes of Switzerland at the end of the 18th century -
William Coxe, clergyman and English traveler, belongs to the tradition of European travelers who journey through Switzerland to directly observe a country then especially sought after for the beauty of its mountains, lakes and valleys, but also for the originality of its political organization and the diversity of its cantons -
The edition thus far exceeds a mere tourist account: each stage of the journey becomes an occasion to describe the territories traversed, their inhabitants, their economic activities, their traditions and their history, while offering reflections on the institutions that distinguish the Swiss Confederation from neighboring European monarchies -
William Coxe - Voyage in Switzerland - 1790 - Volume I, II and III - Letellier -
Good condition of the bindings, volumes in their full original calfskin, worn from use, some minor defects on covers and spine, 3 headpieces slightly damaged with losses, some spine joints cracked, corners worn, speckled edges, smooth spine ornamented, gilt titling and volume numbers on morocco pieces, gilded borders framing the covers -
Good interior condition, paper slightly browned, foxing scattered, small angular paper loss at page 113 of Volume I, beautiful vignette on the title page, nice headbands, volumes enriched with 5 folding plates (maps absent), new translation by Mandar of W. Coxe’s Letters to M. W. Melmoth on Switzerland translated and augmented by Ramond de Carbonnières in 1781, endpapers in acceptable condition, a pleasant copy -
