A superb richly illustrated work with numerous engravings as well as a map of the great island -
In charge of a scientific mission, Dr. Louis Catat landed in Madagascar in March 1889. He would remain there until the end of the following year to (I quote): “to elucidate certain geographic facts, to increase as far as possible the data often incomplete that we possessed on the different branches of the physical and natural sciences, to study the Malagasy peoples, their customs, their practices, and, in general, to make known this great island.”
Mission accomplished in a journey of about 8,000 kilometers in three major expeditions. The first in the center of the country. Then to the east via the “Radama route,” the north and west, crossing the island from coast to coast up to Majunga. Finally, to the south and southeast -
