Description from the seller
Superb illustrated edition of this two-volume set, constituting a vast historical synthesis devoted to religious and military institutions as well as the various orders of chivalry that have marked the history of European and Mediterranean Christendom.
The project is in the tradition of ecclesiastical and noble histories of the 17th and early 18th centuries, which seek to trace the origin, organization, privileges, rules, functions, and evolution of armed religious communities and of confraternities of knights.
The aim rests on the idea that certain orders have occupied a particular position in Christian history by bringing together two apparently distinct dimensions, the religious vocation and the military function, notably in the context of the Crusades and the defense of Christian territories in the East.
