Beautiful collection of 67 pieces Campo del Cielo - iron-nickel meteorite.
Size: 8.3 x 7.3 x 6.2 - 16.9 x 16.3 x 3 mm +/-
Weight: 92.7 g.
Locality: Chaco, Grand Chaco Gualamba, Argentina
Year of finding: 1576 (year of discovery of the meteorite field)
Classification: Coarse octahedrite of the IAB group
Composition: 92.6% iron, 6.68% nickel, 0.43% cobalt, 0.25% phosphorus, 87 ppm gallium, 407 ppm germanium, and 3.6 ppm iridium.
Parts of the Campo-del-Cielo meteorite, an iron meteorite, were first discovered in 1576 in present-day Argentina. A Spanish governor heard reports from indigenous Indians that iron had fallen from the sky. He dispatched an expedition that returned several fragments. The site, a water-scarce plain, bore the fitting name Campo del Cielo (Field of the Sky).
