Description from the seller

Exciting illustrated edition of this collection that, in the tradition of the Port-Royal Bible, retells the biblical narrative about Esther, a young Jewish woman who became Queen of Persia and whose intervention with King Ahasuerus helps prevent the annihilation of her people -

The work is based on the Book of Esther, a story that is at once historical, religious and dramatic, built around the themes of Providence, courage, fidelity to one's origins and the reversal of fortunes -

The story opens with the reign of Ahasuerus, sovereign of the Persian Empire, who organizes a grand feast to display his power and wealth, before repudiating Queen Vashti when she refuses to appear before his guests -

Lemaistre de Sacy - L'Histoire d'Esther - 1882 - Hachette et Cie -
2f., 38pp -

Good condition of the binding, the work in its full red-toile-bound cover from the origin, wear and tear from use, a few minor defects on the cover, back cover faded, headpieces and corners worn, speckled edges, smooth back, borders and motifs in black and gold on the first cover, blind-embossed borders on the rear cover -

Good interior condition, some stains, title page printed in red and black and adorned with a beautiful vignette, text framed, pretty headbands, beautiful initial, the work enriched with numerous beautiful engravings in black both in-text and out-of-text, marbled endpapers in good condition, a pleasant copy -
