Château Haut-Brion is a Premier Grand Cru according to the official 1855 Bordeaux wine classification, alongside Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Latour, Château Mouton-Rothschild, and Château Margaux. Since 1525, the de Pontac and de Bellon families have owned the Haut-Brion estate, the first château ever conceived to function exclusively for the vine. It would take two centuries for the de Pontacs to invent the Bordeaux we know today, even before the owners of Margaux, Latour or Lafite. In other words, they perfected aging and aeration techniques and focused on brand recognition and the specific cru at a time when wines were distinguished only by their regions of origin.
