Description from the seller
Only their backs are visible. The mother, a yellow cardigan and a white fur toque, holds a small flag at the end of her arm. The two little girls—one in a smocked blue dress, the other in a gingham dress—have not moved an inch since the marching band turned the corner. What they are watching is the majorette. White boots, plume-topped shako, tall legs, chin up. They are not watching a parade: they are watching what they would like to become. No one will ever say it out loud.
Low, late-afternoon raking light, heated bricks, blue and red pennants stretched across the sky. The yellow of the cardigan holds the entire foreground by itself, and it is always back to it that the eye returns.
