(*) Jackson Pollock was, along with Mark Rothko and Willem de Kooning, a leading figure of American abstraction. Through his painting he sought to convey the pure energy of the creative act through an ambitious revolutionary technique: action painting and drip painting.
Born in Wyoming in 1912, he studied at the Art Students League of New York with Thomas Hart Benton. Influenced by Mexican muralism of Siqueiros, Orozco and Rivera, as well as the surrealist automatism of André Masson and the structure of Picasso, Pollock soon abandoned figurative work to delve into the language of the subconscious.
After World War II he began his famous drip period, laying large canvases on the floor to pour paint in an intuitive way. Backed by Peggy Guggenheim and critic Clement Greenberg, his works with rhythmic fields and undefined edges decisively influenced Color Field, conceptual art and global abstract expressionism. He thus became a cult figure and an institution of postwar art.
