More information about the artist can be found on his website. www.heersema.com.
Bert Heersema lives and works in Zwolle, Netherlands.
Statement: By staying away from the actual reality around us, I try to evoke a nostalgic atmosphere.
Atmosphere and space are not defined by a multitude of realistic details but rather by simplicity, often a sober color palette, so that a particular color accent draws all the attention.
Recurring visual features, such as shadows, volumes, accent color, strong contrast, nostalgia, and humor, are important recognizable aspects in my work, with emotions playing an ever more prominent role.
Through technique there is a search, various techniques in execution, to probe the boundaries of recognizability (realism), where moviestills from old films (Film Noir) and old documentary material are an important source of inspiration and a basis for a starting design.
And without losing recognizability and realism, the work must above all be a beautifully painted piece, for the experience of the viewer and the viewing distance.
