Ukrainian limited edition of a Czech fairy tale by Karel Jaromír Erben published in 1924.
This is the adaptation of the famous Czech fairy tale The Three Golden Hairs of the Old Man All-Knowing (Tři zlaté vlasy děda Vševěda / Три золоті волосини діда Всевіда).
Original author: Karel Jaromír Erben (1811–1870), a prominent Czech poet, historian and folklorist known for collecting Slavic myths and fairy tales.
The text was adapted into Ukrainian by Vasyl Koroliv-Staryi, a Ukrainian writer and editor who lived in exile in Czechoslovakia in the 1920s.
The work was illustrated by the famous Czech artist Artur Scheiner (1863–1938), renowned for his magnificent Art Nouveau and fairy-tale drawings.
Due to its very limited print run and the historical context of Ukrainian emigration in Prague after World War I, this 1924 edition is particularly prized and occasionally appears in auctions of rare books.
Karel Jaromír Erben (7 November 1811 Miletín near Jičín – 21 November 1870 Prague) was a Czech writer, poet and translator, literary historian and collector of popular Czech songs and fairy tales, a representative of Romanticism.
Artuš Scheiner (28 October 1863 – 20 December 1938) was a Czech painter, designer and illustrator. He was best known for his gouache drawings of great precision, mainly in the Secession style. He produced numerous paintings, illustrations, advertisements, postcards and drawings.
