(*) «The Great Wave off Kanagawa» is the most famous work by Katsushika Hokusai, created between 1830 and 1832. This masterful print depicts a striking scene in which a colossal wave, with its foamy crests that seem about to crash into three fishing boats, rises against Mount Fuji, which stands serene on the horizon. Here, the Japanese artist displays all his creative genius, using the famous Prussian blue, a pigment just imported from Europe at that time, to create subtle gradations that give the composition its characteristic depth. Hokusai’s exceptional technical mastery is revealed in every detail: the bubbly foam of the wave, the dramatic movement of the water, the accuracy of the boats and their crews, down to the iconic silhouette of Mount Fuji that stands out against a sky of great serenity."
