Description of the work:

Excellent devotional oil painting on canvas attributed to the Italian School of the late 16th century, addressing the poignant iconographic theme of the Pietà.

The composition adopts an intimate, half-length framing, focusing all dramatic intensity on the physical and affective interaction between the Virgin Mary and Christ recently descended from the cross. Mary, covered by a night blue veil and a reddish tunic with a white collar, holds her Son’s head with infinite maternal tenderness while gazing at his inert face with a serene and restrained expression.

The figure of Jesus displays a achieved anatomical morbidity in the torso and arm, with a cerulean pallor and details of the wounds and streams of blood from the crown of thorns and the martyrdom. The shadowy background subtly opens toward a distant twilight mountain landscape, typical of Italian Mannerism.
