Upon returning to the Basque Country, he settled in Hernani where he created his first iron work, "Ilarik" (1951), a material he would work with for ten years. By around 1960 he returned to large granite sculptures. He presented his first exhibition in Madrid, in 1954; works and successes quickly followed.
