(*) The American painter Edward Hopper was one of the leading representatives of 20th-century realism. Although for much of his life his pictorial work did not receive critical or public attention and he was forced to work as an illustrator to subsist, today his works have become icons of modern life and society.
He studied at the New York School of Art with William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri. He undertook several trips to Europe, and from early on he became interested in European culture and art, especially the work of Edgar Degas and Édouard Manet. Since 1910 he permanently resided in New York, in his Washington Square house, which he only left during summer stays in New England, from 1930 always in Cape Cod, where he built a house. In 1924 he married Jo Nivison, who not only posed for him on numerous occasions, but who throughout his life maintained a detailed record of his work. His artistic production is relatively sparse, as he was a painter of slow and deliberate execution. At first he associated with the so-called American Scene, a heterogeneous group of artists sharing an interest in American themes, but Hopper soon developed his own pictorial style. His taciturn character and austere forms had a strong influence on his work, which as a whole is characterized by the simplified representation of reality and by the perfect capture of the loneliness of the contemporary man. Through his painting we approach the America of the Great Depression, which to him symbolized the crisis of modern life.
The cinematic treatment of scenes and the personal use of light are the main differentiating elements of his painting. Although he painted some landscapes and outdoor scenes, most of his pictorial themes depict public places such as bars, motels, hotels, stations, trains, all virtually empty to underline the loneliness of the represented figure. On the other hand, Hopper intensifies the dramatic effect through strong contrasts of light and shadow.
Around 1930, as a result of isolationism, his fame increased considerably, although his critical fortune began to grow truly after his death, in 1967, when he started to be recognized as one of the great masters of 20th-century art and not only as an example of American realist painting.
