‘San Francesco’ is a symbolic abstract portrait of Saint Francis of Assisi.

Five white marks descending from above refer to the stigmata received by Saint Francis at La Verna, Italy, during the final years of his life.
Created in 2026, the year marking the 800th anniversary of Saint Francis’s passing on 3 October 1226.
The lateral view reveals the adjacent faces of the cubes, extending the image beyond the frontal surface and emphasizing the sculptural nature of the work.
Giovanni Contardi is an Italian artist internationally recognised for his mosaics created entirely from original Rubik’s Cubes. His installations are permanently exhibited at the Rossini National Museum in Italy and at Disney Hotel New York – The Art of Marvel at Disneyland Paris.
His work was also mentioned by Ernő Rubik, inventor of the Rubik’s Cube, in his autobiographical book Cubed: The Puzzle of Us All (2020).
