Italian first edition of Animismo e spiritismo by Alessandro Aksakof, UTET Torino, 1912, 938 pages, paperback, 23 x 15 cm, in discrete condition with minor exterior wear and 16 black-and-white plates illustrating meditative séances.
Description from the seller
Rare first Italian edition (UTET, 1912) of the famous treatise "Animismo e Spiritismo" by Alessandro Aksakof, a fundamental work for the study of mediumistic phenomena. Published in 1912, at the end of the Belle Époque and in an era of profound cultural renewal between science and mystery, the book applies for the first time a rigorous investigative method to the paranormal.
Aksakof defines there the famous distinction between manifestations produced by the mind and the medium's unconscious (animism) and those attributed to external entities (spiritism). The great charm of the volume also lies in its visual apparatus: 16 rare plates out of text that document historic seances, apparitions, and ephemeral wax casts.
half-cloth binding, 24x16 cm
pp. 938
illustrations in black and white
year 1912
edition: UTET Turin - first edition translated into Italian
author: Alessandro Aksakof
complete and solid, free of writings or markings; the binding has probably been reinforced later with cloth on the spine; darkened areas, small external defects, abrasions; the boards inside are somewhat creased; pages are clean, very good, not yellowed and without foxing. the photos are an integral part of the description
