Description from the seller

Francisco Barrachina Barrachina (1940–2017)
Street scene in Morocco
Oil on canvas. Signed.
An attractive work by the Alicante-born painter Francisco Barrachina Barrachina (Benifallim, 1940 – Alcoy, 2017), known artistically as Paco Barrachina, one of the representatives of the continuity of Valencian realism during the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st.
The painting depicts a luminous urban scene with a North African, probably Moroccan, atmosphere. Several figures, dressed in traditional garments, occupy a street bathed in intense light, flanked by architectures in pinkish, ochre and reddish tones.
Barrachina builds the composition with direct paintwork and especially colorful, using a loose and visible brushstroke. The whites, yellows and blues of the figures contrast with the warm façades, while the intense blue of the sky provides depth and chromatic power to the whole.
The central figure, dressed in yellow, constitutes the main visual focus. Around it are other characters treated with quick and synthetic brushstrokes, a method that allows the artist to suggest movement and daily life without resorting to overly meticulous description.
The work evidences a more spontaneous facet of Barrachina than his more academically crafted portraits: here light, color, and the immediate capture of atmosphere predominate, while still preserving the solid figurative foundation characteristic of the artist.
Francisco Barrachina and Valencian realism
Francisco Barrachina was born in Benifallim (Alicante) on March 16, 1940. Coming from a family linked to rural life, he showed from a very young age an aptitude for drawing. In 1955 his family moved to Alcoy to foster his artistic training, entering under the tutelage of the painter Ramón Castañer Segura. He later expanded his studies in Valencia and at the Circulo de Bellas Artes in Madrid. During his Madrid period he particularly deepened into the Spanish and Valencian realist tradition, studying the works of masters such as Emilio Sala, Lorenzo Casanova and Fernando Cabrera Cantó.
After years of training and work, in 1978 he returned to his homeland, where he established his studio. His career remained closely linked to Valencian figurative and realist tradition, developing a body of work that includes portraits, figures, genre scenes, landscapes and still lifes, with particular attention to light and color.
The artist himself explained in an interview published in Alcoy in 1976 his essentially aesthetic conception of painting: for Barrachina, art should realize itself in the confluence of theme and technique, understanding artistic creation principally through beauty and color. This conception is particularly perceptible in the present painting.
His work was exhibited in numerous galleries and Spanish art centers. Among the milestones of his career are his presence in the European Parliament in Strasbourg in 1987, as well as the incorporation of some of his works into different collections. Works by Barrachina are also documented in connection with the Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection.
His recognition within the Valencian figurative scene has continued after his death. His production regularly appears in the Spanish auction market, including houses such as Fernando Durán, Ansorena and other specialized rooms.
Barrachina died in Alcoy on June 9, 2017, at the age of 77.
The work
This painting provides a good example of his interest in the human figure integrated into intensely luminous environments. In contrast to his well-known portraits, often more restrained in execution, here Barrachina adopts a free and vigorous brushstroke, especially visible in the architectures and in the rendering of the characters.
The scene combines genre observation with a primarily pictorial conception. The architectural volumes are simplified into large chromatic surfaces and the strong lighting makes the figures cast pronounced shadows on the ground. The result is a composition of notable vitality, where narrative description is subordinated to the effects of Mediterranean light, matter, and color.
The work bears the signature “F. Barrachina” in the lower right corner, clearly visible on the painting surface.
It is presented framed, with a wide decorative moulding that enhances its presence.
The state of conservation can be seen in detail in the photographs, which form an integral part of the description.
The frame is included free of charge as a gift to the buyer, not considered part of the work and lacking commercial value. Consequently, any damage to the frame during transport cannot be grounds for a claim.
The work will be carefully packaged to guarantee maximum protection during transport.
IMPORTANT: shipments to islands, overseas territories or destinations requiring customs procedures may incur additional transport, handling and/or customs costs. Such possible surcharges will be borne by the buyer.
