Silver Baptismal Shell – Scallop-Shaped Holy Water Vessel – Portuguese Silversmithing
Portugal assay mark (1985-2020), 835/000, and same date marker's mark.
An elegant silver baptismal shell, beautifully crafted in the form of a scallop shell, traditionally associated with the Christian sacrament of Baptism.
The piece features a richly ribbed shell-shaped bowl, with graceful flowing lines and a finely decorated handle adorned with ornamental scrollwork. Its polished silver surface beautifully enhances the sculptural quality of the design.
Baptismal shells have traditionally been used during the baptismal ceremony to pour holy water over the head of the person being baptised. The scallop shell is also an important Christian symbol, associated with spiritual purification, pilgrimage and renewal.
