After starting training as an art locksmith in 1956, he studied from 1959 to 1961 at the Academy of Arts in Berlin. He maintained contact with other well-known artists such as Georg Baselitz and Markus Lüpertz. From the early 1960s he lived and worked in various cities such as Paris, London, Berlin and in the USA as well as on Mallorca. During his Spanish period he also met Joan Miró several times in his studio. All these experiences are reflected in his extensive oeuvre and testify to corresponding versatility. He has been and remains active successfully in a wide range of fields of the visual arts. Currently, Peter Robert Keil lives and works again in the USA.
