Félix Léopold Desgranges (1860-1942) was a French painter and draftsman born in Paris and who died in Saint-Bresson. The son of a Franco‑Comtois industrialist, he joined the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris where he received the rigorous training of master Jean-Léon Gérôme. He began at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1890, presenting a notable pastel depicting a Breton woman from Pont-Aven. His work, of great technical versatility, alternates between grand bourgeois portraits, landscapes and rural genre scenes. He excels particularly in animal art, immortalizing teams of draught horses, hunting scenes and flocks of sheep. Alongside his oil painting and pastel work, he collaborated as an illustrator with Belle Époque press outlets. Close to sculptor Antoine Bourdelle, Desgranges portrayed him in his studio in 1914, a major canvas today housed at the Musée Bourdelle in Paris. His daughter Germaine would follow in his artistic footsteps by becoming, in turn, a renowned sculptor and Bourdelle’s pupil.
