François René de Chateaubriand composed this tale in 1807 while, exiled by Napoleon three leagues from the capital, he withdrew to his residence at the Vallée-aux-Loups. “The portrait I have drawn of the Spaniards explains quite well why this tale could not be printed under the imperial government. The resistance of the Spaniards to Bonaparte, a people unarmed against this conqueror who had defeated the finest soldiers of Europe, stirred then the enthusiasm of all hearts capable of being touched by great devotion and noble sacrifices.” (Foreword). The Adventures of the Last Abencerage appeared for the first time in London in 1826, then in the edition of the Complete Works issued by Ladvocat.
