Anglo-Indian Sadeli box from India, dating to 1900–1910, crafted in wood with mother-of-pearl and bone, measuring 7 cm high by 16.5 cm wide by 11.5 cm deep and weighing 300 g, in good condition with a working lock.
Description from the seller
This is an antique Anglo-Indian jewelry box from the 19th century. This type of craftsmanship was made in India (often in regions such as Vizagapatam, Bombay, or Rajasthan) for the European/British market and was commonly used at the time as a jewelry box, sewing box, or writing case.
Wood carving: The lid and the front panel feature deep, detailed relief carving in a floral motif. This was traditionally crafted from woods such as sandalwood, ebony, or padauk. Sadeli mosaic: The geometric borders (the light and dark triangles) around the woodcarving are typical of Sadeli work. This is an extremely micro-mosaic technique in which thin strips of different materials (such as tin, horn, bone, and ebony) are tightly bound into patterns and then cut into thin discs to serve as a veneer edge.
Inlay work: The white surrounds and feet are made of inlaid bone, which is characteristic of the luxury colonial export art from that period.
Good condition, the lock works with a key.
Photos are part of the description.
Well packed and shipped with a track and trace code.
