Meiji-era Japanese Kutani cup – red and gold figure decoration – mark “Dai Nihon Kutani-zō” – Meiji period
Description
Beautiful Kutani porcelain Japanese cup dating from the Meiji era (1868–1912).
The piece features a rich polychrome decoration dominated by iron red, brown and gold. At the center is a lively scene depicting several Japanese figures in traditional clothing, gathered in a landscape beneath a blooming tree.
The rim is adorned with reserves alternating floral and vegetal motifs with rich red decorations highlighted in gold. The decoration also continues on the exterior wall.
On the reverse is a red mark bearing the Japanese inscription:
「大日本 九谷造」 – Dai Nihon Kutani-zō
("made at Kutani, Great Japan").
Period: Meiji era (1868–1912), probably late 19th – early 20th century
Origin: Japan

Dimensions: diameter 20.7 cm – height 6 cm
Decor: figures, flowers and traditional Japanese motifs
Colors: red, brown, white and gold
Mark on the reverse: 大日本 九谷造
