Oil on canvas by the Barbizon school, dating to the 19th century, titled Berger et troupeau dans la forêt, France.
Description from the seller
Magnificent oil on canvas from the Barbizon School, 19th century, of the highest pictorial quality, depicting a forest landscape with a shepherd and his flock.
The composition unfolds within a lush forest, dominated by a powerful central mass of trees that visually structures the entire scene. Among the vegetation appear several sheep and the figure of a shepherd, discreetly integrated into the landscape, reinforcing the naturalist and rural character inherent to the Barbizon tradition.
The work stands out especially for the quality of its execution, both in the treatment of the trees and in the richness of the vegetation and in the depiction of the animals. The brushwork is confident, varied and expressive, alternating areas of greater impasto with others more light and fluid, which allows recreating with great effectiveness the different textures of the forest.
The artist demonstrates notable command of light and atmospheric values. Deep shadowed areas combine with illuminated clearings and small warm touches that pierce through the foliage, generating a sense of depth and environmental humidity particularly achieved.
The palette, dominated by deep greens, earth tones, ochres and grayish tones, is enriched by small pink, yellow and bluish accents that appear among the branches and in the clearings of the landscape. The result is a balanced, lively composition with great chromatic richness.
The work is fully inscribed within the Barbizon School tradition, an essential movement in the renewal of 19th-century French landscape painting. The artists linked to this movement accorded fundamental importance to direct observation of nature, progressively moving away from the idealized landscape of academic tradition to offer a more authentic, atmospheric and sensitive view of the rural environment.
The presence of the shepherd and the flock, far from becoming the main motif, is integrated into the landscape as another element of forest life. This approach is particularly characteristic of the naturalist sensibility developed by numerous French painters of the mid to late 19th century.
The painting is in good overall condition consistent with its age, with the usual signs derived from the passage of time. The photographs form an integral part of the description and allow for a detailed assessment of the artwork’s current state.
From a private collection.
The work is offered without a frame.
It will be shipped with professional packaging, carefully protected with materials suitable for artworks, ensuring maximum safety during transport.
For shipments outside the European Union, the buyer should note that any potential duties, import taxes, customs handling costs and any other charges arising from the destination country’s regulations will be the buyer’s exclusive responsibility. Customs procedures may also cause delays relative to usual delivery times.
An outstanding example of 19th-century French landscape painting, linked to the Barbizon School and especially notable for its extremely high pictorial quality, the richness of its execution, the treatment of light and the compositional strength of the forest.
