Kay Nielsen (1886-1957)
The Dane Nielsen is the third great illustrator of the luxurious English books published in the early 20th century (alongside Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac). He arrived in England in 1912 after eight years in Montparnasse, and in 1913 he received a commission for twenty-four watercolors intended to illustrate a volume of old tales, In Powder and Crinoline. The following year, East of the Sun and West of the Moon, a collection of fifteen Norwegian tales, appeared. It was not until 1924 that Hodder & Stoughton published Hans Andersen’s Fairy Tales begun in 1912. The last book, Hänsel and Gretel, illustrated with twelve watercolors, was published in 1925.
