A major work by Claude Serres (1695-1753), lawyer and professor of French law at the University of Montpellier. In it he follows the plan of Justinian’s Institutes to set forth the French law of his time, in particular the written law of the Midi. The work is enriched with a very large number of judgments from the Parliament of Toulouse. This reference manual was continually reissued in the eighteenth century, and it is an essential source for the history of the law of the countries of written law.

Contemporary full calf binding, spine with five raised bands richly adorned with gold ornaments, red morocco title-piece (“Instit. d. Serres”), marbled endpapers with large eye motifs.
Condition: headcap torn, loss of leather at the foot of the spine, rubbing and surface wear. Inner hinges split, marbled endpapers with losses. Dampish areas and small stains on the outer margin of the title page, paper slightly creased. Interior generally sound and complete at 674 pages.
