Set of 5 rectangular Japanese porcelain plates in blue and white – depicting characters – marked “Nabeshima” – Japan

Lovely set of five rectangular Japanese porcelain plates, decorated in blue underglaze on a white background.

Each plate features a traditional scene with several characters in a landscape, accompanied by a pine tree and botanical motifs. The composition is framed by an elegant blue geometric frieze.

The slightly curved rectangular shape, with raised rims, adds a great deal of elegance to the set.

On the back of each piece is a blue mark reading 「鍋島」 (Nabeshima).

The presence of this mark does not, however, by itself allow these pieces to be attributed to the historic Nabeshima porcelains of the Edo period. They are therefore presented with caution as Japanese porcelains marked “Nabeshima.”
