VOLTA - "The Golden Crossing"

Two swaths of foliage unfold like a curtain, built stroke by stroke with small brushstrokes that vibrate between dark green and acid green. In the center the water glows with a warm yellow, crossed by short orange marks that reveal its slow movement. Further on, a blue hill holds back the last coolness of the evening under a sky that fades into the same golden light. Down below, among the reeds, a small group of dark ducks advances compactly toward the light area: it is the sole shadowed point of the scene, and precisely for this reason the most vivid. The painting does not describe the landscape; it breaks it down into light and reconstructs it in a suspended instant, the moment when the day stops to watch something passing by.
