[Numismatique] - Guillaume Beauvais - Histoire abrégée des empereurs romains et grecs... - 1767

Abridged History of the Roman and Greek Emperors, of the empresses, of the caesars, of the tyrants, and of members of imperial families for whom medals were struck, from Pompey to the taking of Constantinople by the Turks…

Paris, at Debure, 1767.

3 volumes in-12 (17 x 9.5 cm), marbled calf (antique binding), decorated spine with raised bands, gilded tooling on the edges, red edges, [4]-xv-[1]-473-[2]; [4]-453; 454 pages (complete). Corners worn, some leather losses on the boards, scattered damp-stains (not serious). Good overall condition.

Original edition.

This work by the numismatist Guillaume Beauvais (1698-1773) is particularly sought after because, in addition to the biographies of the emperors, it includes the list of medals struck under their reigns, accompanied by the degree of rarity and the price of each.
The method of distinguishing ancient medals from those forged by the same author was reprinted at the end of the work.

A pleasant copy.
