The masterpiece of Fénelon (1651-1715), archbishop of Cambrai and tutor to the Duke of Burgundy. He wrote it for the education of the little grandson of Louis XIV, and his veiled criticisms of absolutism earned him disgrace. It was one of the most read books in Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries. This edition by the Paris bookseller Lefèvre, carefully prepared and printed on fine paper, is enriched with geographical and literary notes.
