Portraits des rois de France by M. Mercier, a four‑volume 1783 original edition in French, bound in full marbled calf with gilt decorations, totaling about 1300 pages across four octavo volumes 20 x 12.5 cm, published by A Neuchâtel, De l'Imprimerie de la Société Typographique, in bon condition.
Description from the seller
Louis-Sébastien MERCIER. Portraits of the Kings of France. In Neuchâtel, printed by the Société typographique, 1783.
4 volumes in-8 (approximately 20 x 12.5 cm). Original edition.
Mercier (1740-1814), the author of Tableau de Paris and L'An 2440, traces here the portraits of all the kings of France, from Pharamond to Louis XV, with a free and often critical pen towards absolute power. The work appeared on the eve of the Revolution and was printed outside of France, in Neuchâtel, like most bold texts of the era. The Société typographique of Neuchâtel is celebrated for disseminating the forbidden works of the Enlightenment.
T1: 360 pp
T2: 369 pp
T3: 322 pp
T4: 287 pp
Wood-engraved vignette on the title (bouquet of flowers).
Uniform period bindings in full marbled calf, spine with 5 raised bands richly ornamented with gilt fleurons, title and volume labels in morocco, bookmarks preserved.
Provenance: old handwriting annotation on the flyleaf of volume I.
Condition: a very beautiful set with fresh bindings, slight rubbing and small epidermures, corners a little worn. Interior fresh, good-quality laid paper. Tear with a small loss in the upper margin of the title of volume I, without affecting the text.
