Description from the seller

A sublime masterpiece of Lombard Romanticism attributed to Costantino Prinetti. Immerse yourself in the poetic atmosphere of 19th-century Italian Romanticism. This extraordinary oil on canvas captures a wild and evocative alpine gorge or the shore of a highland lake, and it is superbly attributed to the famous landscape painter Costantino Prinetti (1825-1855). Trained at the prestigious Brera Academy in Milan and strongly influenced by Giuseppe Canella, Prinetti became a key pioneer in the shift of Italian landscape painting toward intimate realism centered on nature, before his tragic and premature death at only 30. A melancholic atmosphere and brilliant chiaroscuro. The work is highly representative of Prinetti’s rarer and more mature production, which often focused on the silent and rugged beauty of mountain torrents, the valleys of Valsassina, and Lombard lakes. The composition presents an imposing formation of rocks and rugged blocks meticulously layered with dense and confident brushstrokes. The mineral tones of earth brown, deep gray, and pale ochre of the stone walls reflect brilliantly in the dense, mysterious water with an underlying moss green color. The dark, cloudy sky and the misty backdrop evoke a deep sense of solitude and sublime nature, perfectly echoing Prinetti’s institutional masterpieces housed in museum collections such as the Brera Academy (for example, “Study of a Torrent” and “Beach on Lake Garda”). Period presentation for high-end galleries: the painting is beautifully housed in its original late 19th-century gilded wooden frame. The rich gold leaf finishes present an authentic and fascinating patina of time that underscores its historical value. This magnificent object is ready to serve as a luxury decorative element with great impact for executive offices, prestigious private libraries, or high-end art collections. Note on authenticity: attributed to Costantino Prinetti on the basis of impeccable stylistic alignment, color palette, and the era’s canvas structure. Painted size: 34 x 44 cm. The lot will be suitably packed and shipped with contracted couriers and online tracking. For this lot, shipments outside the European Community are not available.
