VOLTA - NO RESERVE "Falling Light"

The greens of the hill crumble into hundreds of separate touches — emerald, lime, azure, a few purple spots — and the brushstroke no longer describes the foliage but the light that passes through it. Below, the water opens into a sheet of turquoise crossed by white flashes, while the shadow of evening advances from the lower edge in bands of blue and violet. The balustrade and the stone vase still bear the memory of an orderly garden, of a gaze built to contemplate the lake from above; but here order yields, the trunk of the cypress cuts the view like a dark proscenium and the vegetation climbs the steps until it covers them. The vase, painted in a lilac that no marble possesses, becomes the point at which the painting declares its freedom. The same quiet remains as always, but vibrated, moved, held together only by color.

Volta’s research moves along a path of return — not nostalgic, but active. The great tradition of European painting is the starting point: the period each work evokes, in turn. But the gesture with which this heritage is traversed is unequivocally contemporary. Color does not illustrate, it breathes. The brushstroke does not describe, it vibrates. What remains of the past is the deep structure — a certain idea of the body, of space, of light — while the surface is all present, all alive. Volta does not quote, returns: his compositions seem to emerge from a shared cultural memory, brought to light with different eyes.
