Description from the seller
Moroccan School of the 20th Century – “Four arabe,” Casablanca, 1928
Beautiful watercolor on paper depicting a daily-life scene in Casablanca, entitled “Four arabe.”
The composition shows several figures in traditional clothing gathered around a Moroccan building with large arcades. The free, luminous handling of the watercolor, combined with a vivid drawing, charmingly conveys the atmosphere of Casablanca at the end of the 1920s.
The work is listed as being in Casablanca and dated August 8, 1928 at the bottom right. It also bears an interesting signature to identify.
A particularly notable provenance detail: an old label on the back reads “Exposition artistique de l’Afrique française – Casablanca – 1er au 31 mai 1929,” attesting to the presentation of the work within the colonial artistic context of Casablanca from the following year after its creation.
