Description from the seller
◆ Item Description
This is a hand-painted porcelain single-stem flower vase (ikebana vase) by the Japanese ceramic artist Fujii Shumei (藤井朱明), titled "Oboro Zuki" ("Hazy Moon"). The piece has a classic teardrop silhouette with a long, slender neck opening into a rounded bulbous body, a shape traditionally used for displaying a single flower stem.
The decoration depicts a softly layered landscape rising up the body of the vase: a stylised forest of pine-like trees rendered in graduated shades of blue, fading upward into a pale cream sky where a small gilt moon is set against a hazy backdrop of clouds. The neck is finished in a soft grey-blue glaze that echoes the tonal palette of the design below. The piece is unglazed at the foot ring and bears the artist's mark, written in underglaze blue, on the base.
The vase would suit a tokonoma alcove, a tea room setting, or any interior where a single accent stem is displayed against a refined, atmospheric backdrop.
He is a renowned and accomplished Arita ceramic artist who repeatedly exhibited at the prestigious Nitten (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition) and later established his own "Shumei-gama" kiln, where he perfected original techniques such as unique tenmoku glazes and leaf-vein impression method
