A riot of faces, gestures, decadence and delicious disorder, this extraordinary Michael Joseph composition rewards the eye again and again. At first glance it is a banquet; look closer and dozens of individual scenes begin to emerge - conversations, embraces, raised glasses, extravagant characters and wonderfully eccentric details jostling for attention.
The density of the composition is quintessential Michael Joseph, whose ability to orchestrate large groups of people within a single photographic frame became one of the signatures of his advertising career.
For this new-generation interpretation from the archive, the photograph has been printed directly onto aluminium - and it is here that the image takes on an entirely new life.
Unlike a conventional paper print, the aluminium interacts dramatically with its surroundings. As you move around the piece, the light moves with you: highlights flare into view, figures emerge from darker areas, metallic tones shimmer and then recede. The photograph can appear quite different according to the angle from which it is seen and the changing light within the room. It is exceptionally difficult to capture this effect in a still photograph - it really needs to be experienced in person.
The result is almost cinematic: an image already bursting with movement becomes a living, light-responsive object, continually revealing something new.

My father, Michael Joseph, was a London-based advertising photographer, active from the mid-1960s to the early 1990s, and best known for his photographs for the Rolling Stones’ Beggars Banquet gatefold.
My continuing mission is to share what we affectionately call “the other photographs”: the lesser-known treasures from his extraordinary archive — original darkroom prints, test prints, alternative frames from major shoots, his celebrated group compositions, and more intimate, personal images.
For this special Solo Seller Auction, I am particularly excited to include a selection from Michael’s 1964 Vietnam archive — photographs that have never previously been seen or offered for sale. These remarkable images reveal a very different side of his work, made when he was just 23 years old.
Alongside Michael’s authentic vintage darkroom prints, I am also presenting a new generation of works: striking prints on aluminium and my own handmade cyanotypes, created from his original negatives and transparencies in the Dordogne sunshine. Some are made on vintage photographic paper retrieved from Michael’s own working library, bringing the archive quite literally into a new generation.
Together, the collection brings photographic history and contemporary experimentation side by side — from unique vintage prints made by Michael himself to bold new interpretations of his remarkable archive.
