Four-volume Gallimard Bibliothèque de la Pléiade set in full leather bindings with gilt decorations, illustrated jackets and rhodoids, comprising Racine Œuvres complètes in two volumes (Theatre and Prose, printed 1964 and 1966), Romanciers du XVIIe siècle, and Cardinal de Retz Mémoires, all in French and in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
Beautiful set of 4 volumes from the Bibliothèque de la Pléiade – Gallimard, kept in excellent condition, near new, with full leather bindings, gilt, illustrated dust jackets and acetate (rhodoids).
Set comprising:
1 & 2 – Racine – Oeuvres complètes, 2 volumes
Established, presented, annotated and commented by Raymond Picard.
* Volume I: Theatre – Poetry — printer’s proof dated February 29, 1964.
* Volume II: Prose — printer’s proof dated September 5, 1966.
The two volumes form a very beautiful, homogeneous pair of Racine’s Complete Works.
3 – Romanciers du XVIIe siècle
Sorel – Scarron – Furetière – Madame de La Fayette.
Texts presented and annotated by Antoine Adam.
Volume no. 131 of the Bibliothèque de la Pléiade, printer’s proof dated August 2, 1968.
Edition now exhausted, which makes this volume particularly interesting among the four. It gathers notably Histoire comique de Francion, Le Roman comique, Le Roman bourgeois and La Princesse de Clèves.
4 – Cardinal de Retz – Mémoires
Mémoires – La Conjuration du comte Jean-Louis de Fiesque – Pamphlets.
Texts presented and annotated by Maurice Allem and Édith Thomas.
Printer’s proof dated June 18, 1968.
Condition
Excellent overall condition, near new. The characteristic red bindings of Pléiade are particularly fresh, with gilt very well preserved. Very clean interiors. The four volumes come with their illustrated dust jackets and rhodoids, important for collectors.
Very fine ensemble of 1960s Pléiade editions, notably the Complete Works of Racine in two volumes and the sought-after Romanciers du XVIIe siècle, an edition now exhausted.
The photographs form an integral part of the description and allow appreciation of the remarkable state of preservation of the set.
