Michel Caugant - Case (3) - Earthenware

Set of 3 zoomorphic stoneware terrines – Michel Caugant – France – circa 1960-1980

Beautiful suite of three vintage glazed earthenware terrines, signed Michel Caugant, featuring three birds with different décors: a large white goose, a duck in brown, yellow and gray tones with multicolored details, and a Mallard duck in olive green, black and white tones.

These decorative terrines were designed for the Michel Caugant house and intended, among other things, for presenting charcuterie and pâté preparations. They are today appreciated as decorative objects and collector’s items. Comparable pieces are typically dated from the 1960s to the 1980s.

Each piece consists of two parts, the body forming the vessel and the upper part serving as a lid. The earthenware is glazed and the decorations show beautiful color variations and detailed work, characteristic of this production.

The pieces bear on the underside the characteristic inscription:

“Cette pièce en faïence véritable a été entièrement réalisée à la main. Je vous la propose en exclusivité. Michel Caugant.”

The set is presented in very good vintage condition, with possible small signs of wear inherent to age and use visible in the photographs. The colors remain particularly bright and the glaze retains a lovely shine.

The three terrines form a particularly harmonious decorative ensemble thanks to their different sizes and color schemes. They can be used as collectible items, decor elements, or service pieces.

1. Large white goose Michel Caugant
Vintage condition: Good. The piece shows a crack/ fissure visible on the lower part of the vessel, starting from the rim and extending downward. There is also a small chip on the edge of the lid, near this area. These defects are clearly photographed and should be taken into account. Despite this, the terrine remains complete, with its lid, and retains a very attractive overall presentation.

2. Polychrome duck brown, yellow and gray Michel Caugant
Very good overall condition. The terrine is complete with its lid. No chips, cracks, or notable restorations observed during examination. Very light signs of age or use may be present, consistent with a vintage piece.

3. Mallard duck green and black Michel Caugant
Very good overall condition. The terrine is complete with its lid. No chips, cracks, or notable restorations observed. A few very light superficial traces of use may be visible on the glaze, not detracting from the piece’s overall appearance.
