Two Holy statues crafted in Spain or Portugal. Circa 1950-1960. Depicting Saint Peter and Saint Sebastian.

Saint Peter is universally known within the Christian tradition as the keeper of the keys to heaven. The key this statue bears on its chest refers directly to the well-known Bible passage from the Gospel of Matthew (16:19), in which Jesus says to Peter: "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven."

Meaning and background of this Peter statue. Symbolism: the key is his fixed iconographic attribute. In Christian art, Peter thereby symbolically opens the heavenly gates for believers. The fact that he grips the key firmly with both hands against his chest emphasizes the importance of his divine task.

Romanesque appearance: The sober, almost stern facial expression, the large almond-shaped eyes, and the lack of realistic depth fit perfectly with the early medieval Romanesque style. Artists of the 20th century often returned to this primitive style to evoke a sense of timeless piety and mysticism.

Saint Sebastian (Saint Sebastianus): He is the patron saint of archers, archery guilds, and soldiers. According to tradition, he was a Roman soldier who, because of his Christian faith, was condemned to be killed by archers. In art he is almost always depicted tied to a tree and pierced with arrows, or with a bow and arrows.

Dimensions: approximately 35 cm and 34 cm high.

Condition: Saint Sebastian is in good condition. Saint Peter shows obvious signs of age, giving the statue character.
