[Johan de Witt] - Plein vélin - Declaratio Ordinum Hollandiæ West-Frisiæque, Ex ipsis fundamentis Regiminis Belgici desumpta - 1654

[Johan de Witt], Declaration of the States of Holland and West Friesland, drawn from the very foundations of the Belgian regime (followed by: Bibliotheca Nummaria).

Printed by Joannes Maire & Ludovicum Elzevirium, Leiden & Amsterdam, 1654. Complete.

Full period parchment, smooth spine with handwritten annotations.

Engraved title pages.

Secretly drafted by Grand Pensionary Johan de Witt, this declaration justifies the Act of Seclusion of 1654 prohibiting the House of Orange-Nassau from access to high office in the Republic, a demand of Oliver Cromwell to conclude the peace. Printed by the prestigious presses of Jean Maire and Louis Elzevier, this anonymous work is a major diplomatic document of the first Anglo-Dutch War. This volume is remarkably complemented here by an ancient numismatic bibliography (Bibliotheca Nummaria), increasing its interest for the history of learning in the seventeenth century.
