Claudio Achillini's Poesie di Claudio Achillini dedicate al Grande Odoardo Farnese Duca di Parma, e di Piacenza, &c., in a 1632 first edition with una lingua originale Italian, bound in parchment, published by Clemente Ferroni in Bologna, 224 pages, in very good condition.
Description from the seller
An especially interesting specimen containing the first draft of the Poems of Claudio Achillini (1574–1640), a figure of the utmost prominence in Baroque lyric poetry and Italian marinismo.
The volume opens with the title page decorated by an engraved frieze, the ecclesiastical approvals and the printing license (Imprimatur, Bologna), the famous Dedication Letter to Duke Odoardo Farnese, and the "Author's Protest" (where the poet declares his Catholic orthodoxy regarding the use of mythological and profane figures).
Full hard parchment from the 17th century, with a spine of raised cords. Solid structure and well preserved.
Pages well preserved, fresh and well inked, with initial initials, historiated initials and woodcut finials. Wide margins. Noted are slight and physiological ink-throughs (ghosting) due to the nature of 17th-century paper, but they do not compromise readability of the text at all.
Genuine copy, free from invasive restorations and not trimmed.
A fundamental work for lovers and collectors of Baroque literature, Bologna editions of the Seventeenth Century.
In 8°, pp. 224 n.
