(*) Christo Wladimirow Jawaschew was born on June 13, 1935 in Babrowo (Bulgaria). Between 1952 and 1956 he studied fine arts in Sofia. Christo moved to Paris in 1958 and met Jeanne-Claude de Guillebon, who was born in the same year as he was. They married and decided to combine their talents as creators. Their first joint exhibition took place in 1961. In the same year they designed packaging at the Cologne harbor. In the following year they organized, as a protest against the Berlin Wall, a gigantic gathering in Visconti Street in Paris, where barrels of oil and gasoline were stacked. This period is the starting point for thousands of proposals, including numerous creations, poetic and gigantic packaging projects that seek to manifest the transience as artistic expression.

The couple settled in New York in 1964 and Christo and Jeanne-Claude became American citizens. They take space, wrap, cut, color monuments and landscapes and give the urban, rural, or maritime landscapes of their choosing a new sculptural dimension (Valley Curtain, Running Fence, Surrounded Islands, Biscayne Bay, Pont Neuf in Paris, Reichstag in Berlin…).

Christo and Jeanne-Claude are known for defending and realizing their projects with their own means. For each of them they prepare preliminary drawings, graphic works (lithographs and serigraphs), collages, models, and films whose sale finances the project itself. "The Gates", his latest film, was shown in early 2005 in New York. It is a 37-kilometer-long stretch through Central Park, studded with 7,500 gates, wrapped in saffron-colored fabrics. His next film bears the title "Above the Arkansas River"; to be installed in Colorado.

Christo died on May 31, 2020 at the age of eighty-four.
