(*) Christo Wladimirow Jawaschew was born on June 13, 1935, in Babrowo, Bulgaria. Between 1952 and 1956, he studied visual arts in Sofia. Christo settled in Paris in 1958 and met Jeanne-Claude de Guillebon, who was born in the same year as he was. They married and decided to unite their talents as creators. Their first joint exhibition took place in 1961. In the same year they designed emballages (packaging) in the Cologne harbor. The following year they organized a gigantic gathering in Visconti Street in Paris as a protest against the Berlin Wall, where barrels of oil and gasoline were stacked. This period is the starting point of thousands of proposals, including numerous creations, poetic and gigantic packaging projects that aim to manifest the transience as artistic expression.

The couple settled in New York in 1964 and Christo and Jeanne-Claude became American citizens. They take possession of space, envelop, cut, and color monuments and landscapes, giving the urban, rural, or maritime landscapes of their choosing a new sculptural dimension (Valley Curtain, Running Fence, Surrounded Islands, Biscayne Bay, Pont Neuf in Paris, Reichstag in Berlin…).

Christo and Jeanne-Claude are characterized by defending their projects themselves and realizing them with their own means. For each, they prepare drawings, graphic works (lithographs and silkscreen prints), collages, models, and films, the sale of which finances the project itself. “The Gates,” his latest film, premiered in early 2005 in New York. It is a 37-kilometer-long stretch through Central Park, studded with 7,500 gates draped in saffron-colored fabrics. His next film is titled “Above the Arkansas River”; installation planned in Colorado.

Christo passed away on May 31, 2020, at the age of eighty-four.
