Artistic Tapestry “Onryō – The Avenging Demon under the Moon” – Printed on Regenerated Leather

Decorative tapestry made on a regenerated leather support, with a high-definition artistic image inspired by Japanese art, the folklore of yōkai and the eerie depictions of vengeful spirits and supernatural beings of the Nipponic tradition.

The composition is dominated by a gigantic demonic figure with a gaunt, skeletal appearance, depicted with long horns, a fierce face, disheveled hair and limbs ending in large claws. The character advances facing the viewer, occupying almost the entire scene and giving the work an extraordinary sense of presence and threat.

The creature’s body appears worn and almost cadaverous, wrapped in ragged garments and strips covered with characters, elements that emphasize the ritual and supernatural nature of the representation. The oversized hands, sharp fingers and the strongly emphasized bone structure contribute to creating a figure suspended between Oni, a vengeful spirit and a creature of the yōkai world.

Behind the demon unfolds a suggestive nocturnal landscape dominated by a large full moon, an element that symbolically illuminates the entire scene and reinforces the mysterious atmosphere of the work. The cloudy sky and the contorted vegetation introduce a sense of unease, while the crown of an ancient pine rises at the top of the composition.

The landscape is rich in references to the traditional Japanese imagination. Several torii emerge among mountains and vapors, while elegant stone lanterns mark the path that crosses the scene. These elements evoke a sacred place or a passage between different dimensions, creating a striking contrast between spirituality, nature and demonic presence.

Around the creature, flames and tongues of otherworldly fire develop, seeming to surface from the ground and rocks. Their sinuous shape accompanies the verticality of the figure and helps give movement to the composition, as if the demon were emerging from an environment belonging to a realm beyond this world.

Particularly effective is the contrast between the monumental central figure and the meticulous depiction of the surrounding landscape. The great body of the demon dominates the torii, the lanterns and the trees, accentuating an almost superhuman scale and turning the entire scene into a fantastic and unsettling vision.

The monochrome rendering in black and beige tones gives the tapestry an ancient, dark and timeless character. The extremely dense line work highlights anatomical details, the worn garments, the vegetation and the traditional architectures, while the warm tone of the background recalls the appearance of ancient eastern prints made on paper.

The leather-like support gives the tapestry a distinctive tactile presence, capable of further enhancing the complexity of the image. The slightly textured surface interacts with the drawing and emphasizes chiaroscuro, contributing to a sense of depth and the graphical richness of the work.

Along the margins there are vertical cartouches with characters in a Japanese style, which reinforce the aesthetic reference to traditional prints. At the bottom right there is also a physical red seal, a distinctive detail that creates a refined chromatic contrast within the monochromatic composition and enhances its decorative and collectible character.
