For sale: a very rare issue (ancestor of the press): Discourse on the Defeat of the Garrison of Soissons (the town where the army of the Holy League had taken refuge) which was led by Baron de Conan and Sieur de Belfont, on Wednesday, 15 February 1595, in the plain of Ville-Coterets (Villers-Cotterêts), 8 pages (printed in Montpellier by Jean Gillet).
After Henry IV’s entry into Paris, in August 1594, Soissons had become the retreating position of the Leaguers led by the Duke of Mayenne (Charles II of Lorraine, Duke of Mayenne, born 26 March 1554 in Alençon and died 3 October 1611 in Soissons, a French noble of the House of Guise and a military leader of the League during the Wars of Religion). On 15 February 1595, the garrison of the city was routed by the royal army in the plain of Villers-Cotterêts.
In 1595, the King of France declared war on Spain. On 5 February, a revolt at Beaune against the League. Marshal Biron entered the city and besieged the château which surrendered after six weeks. On 15 February the Leaguers’ army was defeated in the plain of Villers-Cotterêts. From 24 February to 23 March, Protestant Assembly of Saumur against the restriction of the number of places of safety…
