Pierre FLOURENS - TEETH AND BONES Recherches sur le développement des os et des dents. - 1841

Pierre Flourens’s Recherches sur le développement des os et des dents is a significant nineteenth-century work on the development of bones and teeth. Published in Paris in 1841 as an extract from the Archives du Muséum d’Histoire naturelle, it contains 12 hand-coloured plates based on drawings by Werner, illustrating Flourens’s anatomical observations.

This copy is preserved in later sand-coloured paper boards with a title label on the upper cover. It contains pages 315–460 and the complete series of 12 coloured plates. Despite some lower light water staining, the plates remain unaffected. The work was originally issued as an extract, with a separate edition appearing the following year. The first plate is coming loose.

The work reflects Flourens’s broader scientific career at the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, where he taught human anatomy and comparative physiology.

The work appeared the year after as a monograph.
