Description
This exceptionally well-preserved Roman pendant depicts the Aquila, the eagle sacred to Jupiter (Iuppiter) and a powerful emblem of Roman imperial and military authority. The bird is modelled frontally with an upright head, folded wings, articulated legs and a large integral suspension loop; the triangular openwork beneath the body gives the miniature composition unusual sculptural depth.
Roman Imperial eagle pendants and miniature eagle figures preserved in museum collections demonstrate the broader use of aquiline imagery in personal and military material culture. Comparable forms also occur in specialist antiquities catalogues, particularly compact cast-metal eagles with integral suspension devices.
Its miniature scale, three-dimensional modelling, surviving surface character and unusually legible anatomical details give this Aquila a particularly distinctive archaeological presence within the Roman figural pendant tradition.
Information
The presentation and sale of this object are conducted in accordance with principles of transparency, scholarly consistency, and good faith, and no object is knowingly presented as a copy or imitation.
The object has been documented using high-resolution imaging equipment, with its physical structure and form left entirely unaltered; only limited color-balance adjustments have been applied to ensure visual accuracy. As high-resolution imagery may influence the perception of scale, the photographs should always be considered together with the stated measurements.
All statements concerning dating, intended function, symbolic or iconographic interpretation, and material identification represent high-probability academic assessments based on typological analysis, comparative examples from museum collections, and expert opinion; definitive verification would require advanced laboratory analysis beyond the scope of the sales process.
