In a tabernacle frame, its lower border suggests the presence of the open sarcophagus. The body of Christ is held above the open sarcophagus, by John and Joseph of Arimathæa; behind him Mary laments. The background is formed by a hilly to rugged rocky landscape. A comparable, albeit mirrored, Entombment scene by Quentin Metsys (1466–1530) is held in the Diocesan Museum in Gaeta. A composition of the same format is kept in the Leuven Museum.
