Description from the seller
Théophile Gautier / Gaston Bussière - Enamels and Cameos - Librairie des Amateurs (A. Ferroud - F. Ferroud, successor) - 1923.
The work includes 11 illustrations hors-texte as well as numerous tailpieces, banners, and vignettes engraved after Gaston Bussière.
Théophile Gautier (1811-1872) is a major French poet, novelist and art critic of the 19th century, a leading figure of the Parnassus. He advocates the concept of “art for art’s sake,” rejecting any utilitarian or moral function in poetic creation. This collection was developed in the mid-19th century, a period when Gautier sought to refine the poetic language to mirror the work of a goldsmith or sculptor.
Gaston Bussière (1862-1928) is a French Symbolist painter and illustrator, a student of Alexandre Cabanel and Gustave Moreau at the École des beaux-arts de Paris.
This collection gathers short, finely wrought poems celebrating formal beauty, plasticity, artifice, and art through meticulous evocative descriptions of jewelry and precious stones.
Binding signed at the tail by R. V. with light rubbing and slightly worn edges but overall in good condition.
